Cost Of Living: What Support Do Employees Want From Employers?

We help businesses of all shapes & sizes reward their staff 🚀
23/03/2023

In association with YouGov, we recently carried out our 2023 Drewberry Employee Benefits & Workplace Satisfaction Survey.

We polled 1,000 employees at UK SME’s to find out what support they wanted from their employers to help with the current cost of living crisis.

Employees Don’t Think Employers Are Providing Enough Support

We asked respondents ‘Do you feel your employer is providing enough support with the cost of living?’ 37% disagreed (24%) or strongly disagreed (13%).

Over Half of Employees Not Receiving Any Support From Their Employers

When asked ‘How is your employer supporting you with the cost of living crisis? A staggering 53% of employees said that they weren’t providing any.

For those receiving support, the main types of help being provided were:

  • Pay rise (18%)
  • Health and wellbeing services (16%)
  • One off payments (12%)
  • Increase in remote working (10%)
  • Financial wellbeing support (9%).

Cost Of Living Impacting Work Performance

By not providing any support businesses could find themselves in a position where productivity and morale declines. We asked respondents if they felt that the cost of living had impacted their performance at work and over 1 in 5 (21%) said it had.

Lack Of Support Is Causing Employees To Be Unhappy

32% of respondents also said that lack of support was the main reason for causing them unhappiness at work. A happy and healthy team is likely to be more engaged and more productive.

With this in mind, it’s in an employers best interest to try and find ways of supporting their workforce. But what do staff want?

The Support Employees Want: Pay Rise, One Of Payments & Increased Remote Working

With money being named as one of the main causes of stress, unsurprisingly a pay rise (67%) topped the list when it came to the support employees wanted from their employers. This was followed by:

  • One-off payment (25%)
  • An increase in remote working (23%)
  • A travel subsidy (16%)
  • Food and drink in the office (16%)
  • Financial wellbeing support (15%).

Set Up The Benefits Your Staff Really Value

Not all businesses will be able to provide big pay rises or one of payments. However as employees have shown these are just two of many benefits they would really value.

There are plenty of other cost effective alternatives which can help to support them.

  • Remote working
23% of employees want to see their employers to allow more remote working. This is a benefit which is free to implement, but could help employees save on costs such as travel. This could significantly help considering 68% of respondents said they had seen an increase in petrol and diesel costs.
  • Employee Discount Scheme Platform
This is a great cost effective benefit which is really simple to set up. Through a scheme employees get access to discounts and cash back on everyday purchases. This can help them to save hundreds if not thousands of pounds a year.
  • Workplace Financial Education
By educating employees on topics such as debt management, investments and savings, you can help them to make more informed decisions. This knowledge can then help employees to manage their finances better.
  • Salary Sacrifice Benefits
Benefits such as salary sacrifice workplace pension contributions can actually help boost your employees monthly pay. As contributions are taken before tax they are highly tax efficient and the savings made can get added to your employees net pay.

Implementing the right benefits that align with the needs of your employees and your budget can be overwhelming.
