Earlier this year AIG introduced their Smart Health app and rolled it out to all their existing group clients.
We pay for Drewberry employees to have Death in Service which is provided by AIG and as an existing client we gained access to this additional benefit. The Smart Health app is an on demand video/phone GP service with both iOS and Android apps. The service is available to all employees and their family members.
Running a business I am somewhat time poor and the last thing I want to spend a morning doing is waiting to see a GP. I hate to admit it but more often than not I would put off going in the hope whatever the issue, it will just sort itself out and get better 🤦.
This time I had to face the music and needed to see a GP and I thought it would be a good opportunity to test out the app.
Setting up an account was really simple; in addition to your personal details all you need is your group policy number which I got from our wiki. Once signed up you have the option of a video or phone call.
The earliest you could book an appointment was 30-45 mins in the future but the process for doing so was very simple and the interface was really easy to follow.
Once I had confirmed my appointment I had a call from a nice lady who wanted to check my details and let me know what to do when my appointment was due.
When my appointment was due I fired up the app and went straight into a video call with my GP. The video call was good quality and worked as expected.
The biggest surprise was the quality of the service. I know our NHS does the best it can with the limited resources but I have always come away thinking I was on the clock and conscious of a full waiting room of patients still to be seen.
During the video call the doctor was very thorough in making sure they had covered all my symptoms and took the time to explain why they were asking certain questions.
It was really nice that none of my own questions seemed like they were too much trouble and all were answered clearly and gave me confidence in the service being provided.
Naturally a video call has limitations compared to seeing a GP in person but there are a lot of cases where it can provide much needed peace of mind with far more convenience than heading to your local surgery.
If you are in need of a prescription or need a referral to a specialist it can all be taken care of through the Smart Health app, which could be particularly convenient for those who have a regular prescription.
Overall, I had an incredibly positive experience using AIG’s Smart Health. The appointment was thorough, easy to arrange, didn’t feel rushed and was just what I needed to provide advice and reassurance without having to take time out of the office to wait in my local GP surgery.
While an appointment with my GP could have taken days, I had an almost instant appointment via Smart Health.
I can see why app-based GP services in general have become so popular, especially with business owners keen to look after their staff while minimising health-related absences and, as a company director, can now make a personal recommendation for the quality of these services.
