British Friendly, a mutual society, is among the first to report its claims data for the 12 months to December 2019 and paid 94% of all the Income Protection claims it received last year.
British Friendly’s new claims statistics have shown that the mutual society paid 94% of all claims received in 2019.
The biggest cause of claims last year was for musculoskeletal issues, such as bad backs, which accounted for 44% of all claims.
General illness / injuries and anxiety / depression made up 12% of claims. Infectious diseases (8%) and gastrointestinal problems (6%) were also top reasons people made claims on their British Friendly Income Protection in 2019.
One such British Friendly member who had to make a claim last year was Neil. We advised him on his British Friendly policy and he’d held it for a few years before unfortunately developing bowel cancer and being unable to work following his surgery and a recovery delayed by sepsis.
British Friendly paid his claim, allowing him to keep up with his mortgage payments and other essential outgoings so he could concentrate on getting better.
Check out his story in the video below.
Tom Conner :: Director
“We’ve always advocated heavily for insurers to publish their claims statistics and today almost all insurers do so. This gives clients a valuable insight into each insurer and should provide comfort that their provider will pay a claim when it’s needed the most.
“British Friendly is among the first to publish their statistics. We look forward to the remaining Income Protection providers we work with on a daily basis publishing their 2019 statistics also, providing a true comparison of how they performed in terms of claims paid over the past 12 months.”
