I read that stress is covered by Income Protection. Is that correct?
Income Protection Insurance can cover stress-related illnesses and mental health issues.
Generally, Income Protection policies do not have standard exclusions but please bear in mind that most insurers will not cover you for a pre-existing condition. So if you’ve suffered from bouts of stress in the past, especially if it’s needed medical intervention, then it’s unlikely you will be able to get mental health conditions covered by Income Protection.
However, the good news is that as Income Protection policies are medically underwritten upfront you will know from the outset what is covered and what is not.
Mental illness is one of the biggest causes of work absence in the UK, and according to Mind it will affect 1 in 4 of us (mind.org.uk). That’s why it pays to look for a protection policy, particularly Income Protection Insurance, that provide access to free to use, private therapy services such as counselling if required. Qualified counsellors and support staff can provide speedy, telephone-based or face-to-face help for those in need.
If you’re looking to take out Income Protection and need some help considering your options please do not hesitate to pop us a call on 02084327333 or email help@drewberry.co.uk.
