I’ve been talking to a work colleague who I go surfing with and he has recently taken out Critical Illness Insurance. I think it’s something I should get. What are my options?
Within an application process for critical illness cover an insurer will want to obtain information relating to any hazardous pursuits during the underwriting process.
Although it is possible to get Critical Illness Cover without a surfing exclusion, it will depend on several factors such as where you surf, the type of surfing you do and how frequently you surf.
If you surf for leisure purposes very occasionally on a UK beach or whilst on holiday then it’s likely that an insurer would be happy to accept your application without a surfing exclusion.
If you surf regularly all over the world, partake in competitions and/or are sponsored then it’s likely that most insurers would feel the need to exclude surfing from your plan.
If you partake in what might be considered very dangerous surfing, such as on big waves or around rocks or reefs then it is possible that some insurers may decline cover altogether.
As we have access to the underwriters at all UK critical illness insurers, the best thing to do is speak to one of our independent protection advisers and they can try and find you the best policy for your needs.
